Capturing the Neon Pulse and Vintage Glow of Midnight

Customized Typeface, Collaborated with GM Creative
For Mayonaka Sushi Bar & Restaurant

GM Creative slid into my DM asking for my phone number—and the next thing I know, they’re commissioning a typeface for Mayonaka, a Japanese restaurant. Didn’t see that coming!

We took the logo as our starting point to develop a custom display typeface. G M already made some unique letters like /Y or /K from the fish shape.
Since the brand lives in the "midnight" space, we leaned into the visual contrast of a city after dark. We played with a specific tension of in-and-out: round contours paired with square counters. This was a direct nod to those old-school street LED signs, the kind that buzz with life and a slight flickery charm.

We wanted the font to feel like it was glowing from within, balancing that sharp, digital "grid" feel with the softness of neon tubes.

The result? A typeface that glows with character—just like the buzz of a late-night stroll through the city.
